“Remain in Me, and I will remain in you.”
fat tuesday
literally. Yesterday was what we celebrate as donut day. I made homemade donuts in celebration just like my mom always made growing up. She used to make dozens and dozens of these beauties using my great grandmother’s recipe (the same one I used yesterday), and we would take them to our teachers and neighbors. I didn’t make nearly as many. But, I did take some to the contractors working on our basement and to some moms at school and the crossing guard. And, I tried something new–adding chocolate chips to the recipe…as if they weren’t sweet enough when you deep fry the batter and then cover them in cinnamon and sugar. For those of you (like my contractors) who are thinking that my family just made up this holiday to eat yummy treats—Fat Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday when Lent starts. Historically, people would make donuts and pancakes to use up their fat, eggs, and dairy before Lent started the next day. We don’t celebrate Lent, so I’m not too sure why my family always did Fat Tuesday…so, maybe we did do it just to eat yummy treats. Hmmm…
amen, sister
what else would you do in single degree weather…
besides go to the beach! Since Evan and Mark have off tomorrow for MLK, Jr. Day, we decided to surprise the kids and head to my parents’ condo in Fenwick Island, DE for the weekend. So, while the kids were either at school or busy on Friday, I packed everybody up and loaded up the car myself. Then, we told the kids that we were going to go out for dinner. We drove about an hour, had dinner at a little diner, got back in the car and drove to the beach. The kids fell asleep in the car and woke up when we arrived. They were a bit confused at first and then really excited. It was a fun surprise. It’s freezing down here though. It literally was 9 degrees yesterday morning. So, we haven’t done too much besides hang out and head to Game World (an arcade down the street the kids love). But, we did go play indoor mini golf today which was fun. Evan just loved it. When we got back to the condo, he said, “This is the best day ever!” Of course, the day will get even better if the Eagles win today. We’ll see. We’re going to go out to eat regardless. But, I’m hoping it’s a celebratory dinner for the Eagles making it to the Superbowl! Enjoy pics of our outing today.
