My Psalm of Response #2014top10 #10

12.31.14

Kelly in park with fave

O Lord, Sovereign God, maker of all things, sustainer of life.
You know all things; nothing exists that you do not know.
But, you don’t stop there. You don’t just know all things; you are engaged with all things.
You are always present, always active, always working.

Lord, it was you who nudged me. It was you who stirred my spirit.
It was you who gently led me and fully provided.
It was you who picked me up and carried me across the world as your ambassador.
It was you who whispered encouragement in my ear and into my heart and upheld me.

You said, “This is my servant. I am her God. I delight in her,” proving yourself faithful not because of who I am but because of who you are.
Your song over me and your joy in me sustained me when my knees were weak and lifted my spirit when I was weary.

You led me on a path I did not know, a path I thought would bring your light to a dark place.
But, that path led me to you, father to the fatherless, companion to the lonely, the One true friend to the seeking.
You were already there, already at work, already drying tears and healing broken hearts.
You were already closing the gaps on tiny lips and in people’s lives.

You don’t need me to bring you there. You don’t need me to be a savior.
I lay down before you knowing I am unable, aware of my frailty and my own need to be saved.
But, you lift me up and welcome me as your child to be a part my Father’s work.
You invite me to love with my heart, head, and hands despite of myself.

You are higher than the mountains, louder than the cries of humanity, bigger than the greatest walls man can build.
You show compassion to those without a family and those who grieve not cradling their children.
You guide the hands of even those who do not yet know you to do your work. You give glimpses of you.
How can I not know you more, crave you more, love you more?

O Lord, Sovereign God, maker of all things, sustainer of life.
You know all things; nothing exists that you do not know.
Thank you for calling me, saving me, loving me, using me.
You are the only sovereign Lord, and I am your servant.

Counting down hours until Santa arrives home

12.17.14

It’s been 10 days. Early on December 7th, he left Philly for Beijing to visit, encourage, pat on the back, hug as needed, and bring a very heavy suitcase or two full of things from home. In addition to some bags of coffee and other treats that aren’t easy to find on that side of the globe was literally a mountain of Christmas cards. 50 lbs of them to be exact. Our mailman has been really fond of us lately, I’m sure, as the families and supporters of these 20 teachers sent hundreds of cards to our home for Mark to pile in a bag devoted only to cards and hand deliver them.

IECS xmas cards

I wish I could have been there to see their faces and their tears as they opened each card and read the words written freely without any codes. While I know it’s hard for them to be there and miss their families during such a special time, I know that celebrating Christmas together as a team is a celebration they will remember the rest of their lives. And, this Christmas at home, celebrating with Helen and Caleb as they are here, not all that unlike the teachers in China, separated from their husband and Daddy and larger family, is one we all will remember the rest of our lives too.

Santa is on his United sled right now, heading back to the North Pole. And, Mrs. Claus and her friend and our five little elves are counting down the hours.

While I’m dealing with freshly cut bangs,…

12.12.14

Mark is judging singing competitions in Baoding, China.

Unfortunately, the audience popular vote held way more weight than the American judges’ votes because these girls rocked it and ended up losing to some other girls who were in 7th place before their friends had a say.

Our “interesting” new home

11.16.14

Everything is interesting in our house.

The trail that airplanes leave behind them in the sky.
Carseats.
Pretzels (a Philadelphian food group).
Coffee every morning (a Kelly Raudenbush food group).
Red and yellow Autumn leaves.
Lunches on the go.
Big yellow school buses.
The dishwasher.
Heat we can control.

Over the last couple years, I have spent a lot of time writing about things that are interesting to me about China as we have traveled back and forth, led teams of people there, and fallen in love with this far away place. But over the last two weeks, I have been consumed with all the things interesting right here around me as we watch our friends experience them for the first time.

Our guest room is no longer a guest room; it’s Helen’s room. She has a towel with her name on it hanging on the back of the door. Her books are on the nightstand. And, she’s posted the children’s library schedule on her wall. It’s no longer a sterile room that we quickly put together with second-hand finds; it’s full of color and personality and activity, especially since we haven’t been able to convince 3 year old Caleb to transition off her floor to the bottom bunk in Drew’s room.

Our friends and coworkers arrived from China nearly two weeks ago, needing a safe place to live as her belly grows for the second time. They weren’t safe where they were since they are from the most conservative province in China when it comes to second children. They may have been okay; but no one was willing to take that risk. Maybe safe isn’t good enough when we’re talking about life. We were excited to have them, but I confess we thought it might be challenging. But, so far, despite our one full bathroom and outdated kitchen, it’s been a blessing.

The piano I had to have that not a single person in our family plays has been filling our home with Chinese hymns. Our children have been running home from school to play with the little boy who has taken over all the toys they sort of forgot about over the years. I’ve had a friend beside me stirring dishes on the stove. And, we’ve been lingering at the dinner table longer in the evening as we continue conversation.

Evan voluntarily joined me for one of my many recent trips to the grocery store. He didn’t sigh or complain when I had to return to the back of the store because I forgot something. He stood in line with a smile and pushed the cart for the entire trip while I twitted about filling it. Caleb had come with us; that’s why. When we turned left onto our street and our house came into view, Caleb yelled loudly from his “special seat with buckles” in the back, “I see my home! There is my home!”

This is our home for now. Busy, noisy, crowded, and joyful, new, and safe with a whole lot of great smelling food and lots of “interesting.”

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
