100 Wishes Quilt
I started this a long time ago. But, I’m picking it up again now. I’m really wanting to start working on it. So, if you are reading this and want to help me, I’d SO appreciate it!
To welcome new life, a tradition exists in northern China to make a Bai Jia Bei (100 good wishes quilt). Family and friends contribute a piece of cloth and a good wish for the baby. The cloth is all sewn together into a quilt, and the good wishes are put into a scrapbook for the child. The quilt symbolizes wrapping the child in the good wishes of family and friends.
I am making my own version of this quilt by making a yo-yo blanket for Lydia and a yo-yo doll for her big sister Ashlyn. Would you please consider helping me by contributing?
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Choose a 100% cotton fabric that you like. It can come from a fabric store, be something you already have, or be a piece from something special to you like a special piece of clothing, etc.
2. If the material is new, wash it and let it shrink before it is cut.
3. Cut a square measuring about 12″x12″.
4. Write your wish or blessing for Lydia. The wish can be your own thoughts or words, a favorite poem or quote, a blessing, a prayer, a favorite Scripture, etc. You can email it to me or send me a hard copy. From all of these, I will create a scrapbook for her. Please also include a picture of you or your family. You can email a digital picture to me or send me a hard copy. We would love for you to write a few words separately for Ashlyn as well so that she can have a scrapbook that goes along with her yo-yo doll.
Thanks for considering being part of this special project of preparation for both of our daughters–the one we have and the one we will have one day.
crazy hair day
Crazy hair day at Barkley school was a success. I had to go to a couple different stores before I was able to find the colored hairspray. And, my plan of doing two different colors was thwarted when I saw that the spray cost $4 a pop. I just wasn’t going to spend $8 on funky hair. Evan was happy with the blue though. I’m hoping that it truly is temporary and that it comes out in the bath tonight. I’m thinking I don’t want to keep looking at Evan with hair that reminds me of bread mold. And, apparently, Drew and Ashlyn had their own version of crazy hair.
snaggletooth is no more…yahoo!
We’ve been waiting for this day for years. Evan had what is called a twin tooth. He actually had an extra front tooth. So, where one tooth should have been, he had two smaller teeth. Because they were so tight together, the dentist fused them together to make cleaning easier and to prevent cavities. All of us were anxious to see what happened when those teeth (what we “fondly”–if that’s possible–called snaggletooth) got loose. So, a couple weeks ago, we noticed it starting to get a little loose. Then, thanks to a bump at school on Friday, it got quite a bit looser. You should have heard the phone call from the school nurse who was a bit freaked out when looking at Evan’s mouth after his accident–or what she called “his mouth hit someone’s arm” (really?). She called to ask me about his tooth because she panicked thinking the accident split his front tooth. So, after that, it was a bit looser but Evan refused to let us near it. But, tonight, it was past the point of no return. The right side of snaggletooth was completely out, but the left side or tooth was still hanging on. The thing was literally dangling. So, we had about 10 seconds of mass chaos as I helped hold him and Mark tried to wiggle it. It came right out and went right down his throat. Nice. We didn’t plan that one out too well. Evan then sat up and coughed, and it popped out. He was instantly better and happy–even had to wake Ashlyn up to tell her it “fell” out (rarely do they really just “fall” out, right?). Whew. Big sigh of relief from me. And, in case you are wondering, we did have an xray done years ago, and the dentist believes there is one normal adult tooth behind snaggletooth.
