We’re safe and sound. The only water in the house is the pitchers we filled in preparation. And, as far as we can tell, the fierce winds we heard around us last night didn’t damage anything. We never lost power, though flashlights have been the toy of choice around here. Mark even made it out to the office today, though he had to take some detours due to down trees and wires.
I took these pictures this morning a few blocks from where we live. If you can’t tell, there’s a house under this mammoth tree that fell.
Most the streets around us though look a lot like our own here – just lots of debris that was thrown around by the storm.
We are still waiting to hear how my parents’ condo in Fenwick Island, DE fared. We heard that it was okay, but I just saw this picture below posted on Facebook of the road (or river?) outside of the white fence surrounding their parking lot. My parents are in China right now, so they’re fine. But, we’re all worried about what damage awaits us there.
As we finish our game of Disney Monopoly and pack lunches for school tomorrow, life will go on even if the condo is a wreck. As it does, I’m reminded of the how we as a family can respond in the aftermath of the biggest storm we’ve ever seen and maybe ever will.
We are praying for the family a few blocks from me whose house has been destroyed by that tree, praying for the many families on the East Coast in general who have been affected somehow like this, and praying for the people who don’t even have a home to go to for protection. I’m sure there are many people today who are feeling like Sandy defeated them. And, there are many others who are wondering about the damage awaiting them like my parents. We are praying for peace for them and for God to provide for every one of their needs. Even Lydia lifting them up last night. And, though most people wouldn’t be able to understand her mumbled words, I know God did.
Hearing that wind through the night last night and seeing the branches of trees bending under the force, I now understand the lyrics of one of my favorite songs more clearly: “He is jealous for me. He loves like a hurricane, and I am a tree bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy.”
Saw this posted on Facebook–it’s down the street from my parents’ place in DE.
