I overthink a lot of things. But, I don’t overthink politics.
I’m passionate about a good number of things. Adoption’s one of them. Politics are not.
Having said that, some political things do catch my attention as one did today.
Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman was hoping to hold up the Republican cause in the race for the Presidency. As of tomorrow though, according to news just posted online, he’s withdrawing from the race. I’m sure lots of overthinking went into that decision. Overthinking that I hope had nothing to do with the recent buzz I’ve read about from an opponent.
Someone who is passionate about politics apparently, someone who claims to support Ron Paul, attacked Huntsman for his “anti-American” values and for being “soft on China.”
because of his daughters.
He and his wife happen to have 5 biological children and 2 children who joined their family via adoption–one from China and one from India.
This person used video footage of Huntsman receiving his daughter in China and paired it with the words “American Values? or Chinese?”
I’m not quite sure to which American values this person is referring. But, I’m thinking that international adoption doesn’t quite contradict “liberty and justice for all.”
And, frankly, given this video claiming to hold up American values, Chinese values are looking a whole lot more mature.

WOW! I don’t even know what to say, as politics are one of my least favorite things in this world. I hardly consider myself to be “anti-American.” I have family members who have served and currently serve in the military and I have adopted (and will adopt again) from China. Clearly the person making the video needs a lesson in “American values.”

What I want to say is not something I should say so I won’t.
This is ridiculous. Give me 2 minutes with Mr. American Values. Just 2 minutes. That’s all I need.

That’s pretty disgraceful. Personally I think it’s appealing to the baser instincts of “conservatives” who are uncomfortable with those of different races. If he’d adopted a Caucasian child from Russia, I doubt that images of him with his newly-adopted child would have been used to question his “American values”.

This is such an embarrassment on the American system of democracy. That a video like this got made, that folks took it seriously (and from what I’m reading many, many did), and that opposing candidates would even deign to comment on it. Shameful for sure.
Can I just say, this tv and facebook fast in a political hotpot is killing me?! Ugh. I love all the politics of an election year – I’m a bit of a political junkie and feeling seriously cut off from my news’ sources :(

What a shame that the only sane Republican candidate dropped out. Huntzman seemed like a reasonable and honest man. And as for that campaign? Deplorable.

Wow! I didn’t even see that but that is just amazingly wrong. Un-Be-lievable! Was that on you tube or the tv? So many people just don’t “get it”. Wow!

Ridiculous!

That was rude. I missed this comment. I think children should be OFF LIMITS during elections. It’s a shame that something he did out of kindness would be used as a weapon. This irks me to my soul!

Disgraceful! Disgusting and frankly embarrassing that this is how Americans decide to exercise their free speech and political system , our hard earned democracy this way! This is exactly why the best and the brightest leaders in our country stay home and refuse to run for office to lead our country! Our political system is corrupt through and through- morally bankrupt! Sad! Frustrating! Deeply disappointing!

Ughh! Who does that?? How insensitive!
