I do recall complaining this morning to some ladies about how strange it is how our children now celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. I just don’t get it. I don’t get why my children’s entire elementary school would be gathering together to sing happy birthday to Dr. Seuss. He’s dead as of 1991. I just googled it. I get that it’s fun and all that. But, all the hub bub is a little over the top.
Then, I picked up Drew from school. And, there he was proudly wearing his Cat-in-the-Hat hat.
And, he asked me for green eggs and ham for lunch.
There they are. Funny how simply changing the color of something yummy can really make it totally unappealing (hence why Heinz discontinued their colored ketchup line. Ick. And, I say again Ick.).
No, my kids will not get Dr. Seuss day gifts or a special birthday cake. But, I guess eating a little green eggs and ham won’t kill me or them.

Bohdan came home with the same hat..lol…he got off the bus aa proud of it and all. Of course it was all over as the wind started blowing it apart on the walk home from the bus stop. Oh well, I guess we will be remaking that tonight. Happy freak’in birthday! JUST KIDDING!

How fun! I think it’s a fun celebration – a bit of a soapbox, if I may!
First, there are enough things that happen in school(s) that are NOT worth celebrating. As my kids gear up for PSSA’s that comes to mind first. UGH. Teaching to the test and spending so much of the district’s time, money, and focus on reminding us to put our angels to bed on time and feed them a healthy breakfast. UGH. Grrr.
Second, as a “WORDIE” – like a foodie but with words! – I love celebrating the classic, timeless elegance of Dr. Suess. I love his many layers and insight into a kid’s mind and heart. It’s a fun holiday :)
Third, and yes, I’m guessing you figured this out by now, I’m really up for any reason for a celebration. If it’s a learning type celebration, it’s even cooler. I’m totally a geek that way. I love me some educational partying. :)
Okay, stepping down of the box. It must be all the germs floating around here. Fiddling with my brain. I’m so sick of sick.

I did a very long, very detailed literary paper in college on Theodore Geisel aka Dr. Seuss. He’s still kinda one of my idols!

Hi Kelly,
I have to say that when I taught we didn’t do a big celebration, but we did read lots of Dr. Seuss books during the month of March! Many teachers at my school did do a big thing on Dr. Seuss, but it was hard to spend a whole day on him when you had a curriculum to teach!! You would be surprised at how many children didn’t know the books! I do love Dr. Seuss books! He was way ahead of his time in the area of phonemic awareness! The reading specialist in me had to mention that! His books are so great for playing with our language! We read them all the time! Sophia and Graham love to read them before bed! They are fun and playful just like reading should be!!

Cute! I think it’s just a chance to promote reading and have a fun day at school. Dr. Seuss is the most popular childrens books so I guess that is why they chose to do it on his birthday. I think some of his books are a little too much nonsense, but the kids enjoy them anyway. Kaityln just saw the picture of Drew and told me that she misses Ashlyn. As it warms up, I’m sure we will be having some playtime at the park, after our trips to the library. I’ll have to let you know when we are there so the kids can play.

I like his hat. It is sweet that you went along with it just to keep that smile on his face!

Those little things are so important to our children. If we just take time to add a little “color” to something, it makes all the difference in the world.
Your a great mommy.
